Boreal Journeys Sled Dogs
In March of 2008, I drove to Wisconsin to meet a musher and his dogs. We were lucky to meet Ben and Alice Stamm who proved to be world class dog owners. Ben was reluctantly retiring from sled dog racing and felt it was only fair to his dogs to allow them to move to a new home where their need for physical activity could be met.
Members of the Family
Ben is in the record books as the first Wisconsin resident to finish the Iditarod, a 1000+ mile race from Anchorage to Nome in Alaska’s wilderness. Ben competed in the race twice (2003 and 2004) and finished it both times. It was obvious to me that if these dogs could run over a thousand miles in Alaska, that they would be well suited to running in the backcountry of north western Ontario. But it wasn’t their abilities as world class athletes that impressed me; rather it was their gentle and friendly nature that was a result of Ben and Alice’s love and respect for their dogs. By gaining the trust and respect of Ben and Alice, I adopted their family of dogs. The dogs have done well here at Boreal Journeys and have been able to form a loving and trusting relationship with us.
